Heart failure

105 609 hryvnias were collected. The Simple Help Foundation, Privatbank clients and Ufond readers raised UAH 105,609. Occluder paid. OPERATED.

Khrystyna Medvedyuk will be saved by urgent heart surgery.

Fourteen-year-old Khrystyna lives in the village of Ratniv, Volyn region. The girl has a severe heart disease - paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, severe insufficiency of the left atrioventricular valve, atrial septal defect. Christina has already undergone one complex cardiac surgery. Then the doctors did everything they could. But now the girl needs another operation. It will be prepared by cardiac surgeons of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. M.M. Amosova. The operation itself is free, but you need expensive equipment - an occluder.

Since the age of eleven, Christina’s parents have been fighting for her life. Behind are several heart attacks and one complex operation, and how many hours of waiting at the operating room door - just can not count.

- After 11 years, my daughter began to have attacks - her heart was pounding. They both appeared unpredictably and disappeared unpredictably. Back then, doctors prescribed a sedative for her daughter, - recalls Oksana, Christina’s mother. - The first attack took place in July 2018, when Christina was in the camp. Ambulance doctors provided first aid and recorded it on a cardiogram. Fortunately, everything worked out. We thought it was fatigue. But, in October, there was another attack. Khrystyna was taken to the intensive care unit, after which we were sent for a consultation to Kyiv, to a pediatric arrhythmologist.

Christina was examined by cardiologists at the Center for Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. Ultrasound revealed a complex heart defect in the girl - paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, with severe insufficiency of the left atrioventricular valve. Simply put, a girl’s heart works with overload. Heart failure develops. If you take two cars, one of which goes uphill all the time, and the other - from the mountain, the heart of Christina can be compared with a car that goes uphill all the time. And her engine wears out quickly, so it can stall at any moment.
The cardiologist explained that either medical treatment can normalize the heart, but this is a temporary solution, or a complex surgical operation - catheter destruction.

- We decided to choose a conservative treatment - to relieve seizures with pills. But, unfortunately, it did not help much, and my daughter was hospitalized several more times, the attacks became more frequent, and we could not cope with them. Christina quickly got tired and was very pale. Our family was constantly anxious, and my daughter was afraid to leave the house, all waiting for the attack to happen again. Then we decided to have surgery.

In May of this year, Christina routinely performed radiofrequency catheter destruction of her left valve. The procedure was successful. But, during the operation, another defect was found in the girl’s heart. The next day, after the operation, Christina underwent another ultrasound, after which cardiologists diagnosed another congenital heart defect - a secondary atrial septal defect, which has already reached 10 millimeters and began to expand the right heart.

- For us it was like thunder in the clear sky. We thought it was over, but that was just the beginning.

For the first time after the operation, Oksana got up several times a night to listen to her daughter breathe. And still her anxiety does not let go. Christina always sleeps restlessly, her breathing is fast.

Closing another hole in Christina’s heart is possible only surgically. In Kyiv, at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after MM Amosova, a pediatric cardiac surgeon recommended endovascular surgery. This method of treatment is the safest, least traumatic and gentle for the child, as the girl has already undergone one heart operation. To perform such an operation requires an expensive implant - an occluder.

- My husband and I are raising two children. We live in the village with my parents. They are already retired, my father is a disabled person of the 2nd group. My son is 16 years old, he has complicated high-grade myopia with astigmatism, his eyesight is constantly falling. And our daughter: a cheerful, cheerful, active and responsible girl who studies in the chemical-biological class and dreams of being a doctor. By ourselves, this expensive device that will save our daughter, we can not buy. Therefore, we are forced to ask all concerned to help raise funds for the treatment of Christina.

Head of the Department of Endovascular Treatment of Congenital and Acquired Heart Defects of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after MM Amosova Igor Ditkovsky (Kyiv):"Christina has a congenital heart defect - paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, severe insufficiency of the left atrioventricular valve. In May of this year, the child underwent the first operation - catheter destruction of the left valve. During the operation, another heart defect was found - atrial septal defect. Due to the nature of the defect, another operation will be required in the future. Given the planned surgical treatment - atrial septal defect requires endovascular occlusion with an occluder in the near future. This is necessary to completely reduce the burden on the girl’s heart.

The supplier of the occluder issued an invoice for 105,609 hryvnias.
