The girl lives in Odessa, she is 19 years old. She has severe thoracic scoliosis, growing hump, crooked ribs squeezing the heart and lungs. The angle of deformation of the spine is progressing rapidly and has already reached 52 degrees. The only way to straighten a girl’s back and relieve her from the burning pain is to perform surgery on the spine with the installation of a fixing metal structure. Alina is ready to perform such an operation at the University Clinic of the Kharkiv National Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology named after MI Small, but the operation is very expensive. Alina’s mother has a disability of the 2nd group, is incapacitated, her father left the family when the girl was two years old. Alina is helped by her grandmother, but she can’t afford the expensive operation.
Alina has a very crooked spine. Lame gait and severe pain in the eyes, unbearable, which does not stop for a moment. Due to back pain, Alina sleeps poorly at night and wakes up every hour. Painkillers help for only a few hours. And then the pain rolls again, the girl screams and opens her eyes. In such moments, she is troubled by one question: why was she so unlucky?
But this was not always the case. Alina used to go to kindergarten, play with her friends, ride a bicycle and wear beautiful dresses as a first-grader. But everything changed suddenly. When Alina was fourteen, the girl began to suffer from severe pain, and her grandmother noticed that her granddaughter’s shoulders were asymmetrical.
- At the age of 14, when I began to suffer from severe back pain, I turnedto the pediatric orthopedist-traumatologist Sergey Vyacheslavovich Yesipenko. After taking a picture, I was immediately sent to the Institute of Pathology of the Spine and Joints named after MI Sytenka (Kharkiv), and they offered to register a disability group, - Alina recalls, - even then, doctors said that the curvature was progressing rapidly and had already reached the third degree, combined form, and only surgery could help.
Alina went to Kharkiv with her grandmother, as the girl’s mother is a group II disabled person, incapacitated, and her father left the family when Alina was two years old and did not participate in the child’s life. Yes, from birth to this day, my grandmother supports , helps and educates Alina.
My grandmother did not have the funds to pay for the operation. Doctors, offered to apply to the fund then.
- I do not remember his name, I only remember that my grandmother immediately began to collect all the necessary documents and sent to this fund, and we were put in line, - says Alina, - but a year later, when it’s my turn approached - we refused. Rejected for the reason that this year, I did a lot, hoping that progression will stop. Massages, physiotherapy, swimming pool, visited a chiropractor, who gave me hope that will help, and was against surgery. At some point, the progression stopped, but the miracle did not happen. Scoliosis began to progress and reached the fourth degree of curvature.
At the moment, Alina has been issued a lifelong group III disability. The girl continues to suffer from excruciating back pain that binds the whole body. She cannot stay on her feet or sit for long periods of time. With great difficulty sitting in pairs, Alina often takes painkillers to remove the excruciating pain, even for a short time.

Alina Koval successfully operated at the University Clinic of the Kharkiv National Institute of Spine and Joint Pathology named after Professor MI Small. The girl underwent correction of curvature of the spine with an implant, which allowed to completely correct the deformity of the spine. After the rehabilitation period, Alina will return to her normal life, study and enjoy life. A year later, no one will even see that the girl had surgery.
