Five-year-old Dima Ovcharenko returned from that world twice. The inability to walk on his own is the only thing that distinguishes him from ordinary children. We meet Dima and his mother Victoria at the Center for Children and Youth Creativity at the place of residence. A cute boy with huge eyes and a mischievous smile wins attention from the first seconds. Mom is holding her son in her arms when he suddenly leans over to me in confidence and speaks.
- Do you want me to tell you the recipe for pies?
"Pies?" - I wonder.
- Yes, pies. Sand pies. It is necessary to take sand, to make a pie from it and to decorate in the end with any ornaments, beads, for example.
A boy demonstrates making sand pies in a sand animation room. Like all children, Dima indulges and does not want to leave. However, an English lesson is about to begin and the boy, complaining that the pies will have to "bake" at home, leaves the room.
There are ten children in the English class. Within five minutes of the beginning of the lesson, the children sit down and get their school supplies. English teacher Svetlana Bondarenko says that Dima came to study a year ago and is not inferior to his peers in terms of academic performance.
- Dima remembers very well, answers well orally. Of course, it is still difficult for him to get into the cells in writing, but as for the oral answers, everything is fine, - says the teacher. - Plays with children, very active. To say that it is different or stands out is not. Even when exercising or exercising, he does his best.
While the lesson is going on, my mother remembers the worst thing in life. The family was waiting for the birth of two boys. The pregnancy was extremely difficult. Doctors warned that one boy would be born with a heart defect. It was planned that Victoria would give birth in Kiev, but according to medical indications she could not be transported even by air ambulance. Both boys were born at the age of six months at the Kharkiv Perinatal Center.
"Both children were stillborn." They were resuscitated. The perinatal center began to find out where to put the second child, because there heart disease was incompatible with life (lack of the left atrium, which is responsible for a large circle of blood circulation, and aortic hypoxia -
author’s note ). No one wanted to take risks and take children for surgery because of their low weight. Dima spent 7 days in intensive care. My second child died 39 days later. I was prepared every day for my child to die, - Victoria recalls. - And for one life we fought, and for the second.
According to Victoria, Dima was very weak, he did not keep his head for a year, the boy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The child was rehabilitated according to Sandakov ’s method (reflex massage -
author’ s note)), by the age of two he became so strong that he began not only to hold his head, but also took the first steps. However, the boy was diagnosed with a heart defect. There was an urgent need to solve this problem.
- Since I have already lost one child, it was necessary to save the life of this child. Opinions of doctors were divided: someone said that problems with the battle duct (usually the battle duct closes in children during the first three days of life, Dima did not close -
author’s note ), someone said that with the coronary artery, - says Victoria. - Operated in Kiev at the Amosov Institute. The operation was promised to last 40 minutes, but lasted two hours. We later learned that Dima had an ischemic death. He was resuscitated, but he stopped walking.
Despite the physical limitations, intellectual development was even ahead. At the age of one, the child spoke.
- At first we had ordinary words, and then sentences, and sentences are not "mom, give", but he already spoke in complex sentences, - says mom. - So, when my son came out of anesthesia right after the operation, he asked me why he suddenly stopped walking.
Victoria abandoned traditional medical treatment. According to her, only human hands can create a miracle. The boy is engaged in exercise therapy, goes to dolphin and hippotherapy. Thanks to constant training, it was possible to correct kyphosis without the help of orthopedic devices. Victoria believes in a miracle - that her son can walk.
- I want to send my son to a regular school, preferably with in-depth study of Chinese. Languages are given to him easily. Let him have several professions that do not depend on his physical condition, - emphasizes Victoria.
Dima is an ordinary child. He has the same requirements as everyone else - McDonald’s, movies, sweets, entertainment. At the Center for Children’s and Youth Creativity, the boy has a best friend, Nastya Ilchenko - they sometimes go to the movies together, play outside. No one in the center - no children, no parents, no teachers - treat Dima as a disabled person.
- On the contrary, parents, seeing such a child - I carry him in my arms all the time - will always help to hold the door. For the first desk planted from the edge to make it more convenient. Teachers are also very positive. It is difficult for children to spend 45 minutes of the lesson, of course, they have some five minutes of play there: run there, play there and the teachers somehow find an approach to Dima, they involve the children in the game. They put Dima in the middle of the class and the children bring him something, and he gives it to them. They use it in games.
In the corridor, several more moms are waiting for the end of the lesson, whose children are studying with Dima. When children ask why Dima does not go, mothers succinctly answer: no time.
- I explain to my child that it’s just time for Dimino to walk. In general, all children are very tolerant of him. It may not be easy for Dima in high school, because teenagers are more cruel, - says one of the mothers.
After the lesson, the children go out into the corridor. Nastya runs up to Dima, holding her mother’s smartphone in her children’s pens. The girl shows something to the boy, and Nastya’s mother explains that the day before, her daughter saw a video on YouTube and thought about Dima.
- There’s a boy somewhere in China in rehab. Nastya says: Mom, look, he doesn’t walk the same way as Dima. I will show it to him tomorrow, - Irina Ilchenko recollects.
After watching the video, Nastya carefully takes Dima, who is sitting in a wheelchair, by the hand, they leave the center and go to play on the playground together.
