Katerina Badikova, Nikita’s mother, will never forget that day: one-and-a-half-year-old Nikita was playing in the crib when the phone rang. An anxious acquaintance called, and Katya became friends with her at the cardio center, where their children were undergoing heart surgery. “Katya, did you check Nikita’s hearing? My son hardly hears, probably this complication after intensive treatment with antibiotics. Katya got cold inside, but it’s true: she noticed that even in intensive care, although her son’s condition was serious, he reacted to the sounds, and when he came home - gradually stopped. But then Katya drove away her fears that Nikita was losing her hearing, and without that they had too many problems!

… Even before Nikita’s birth, looking at the ultrasound of the child’s development, the doctor told Kate: there are suspicions of a malformation of the baby’s heart. Still, Katya sincerely believed that Nikita’s heart would develop and her son would be born healthy, but…
When the boy was born, the doctors’ fears were confirmed: Nikita was diagnosed with a severe heart defect. On the first day of the child’s life, they operated on him, three months later - again, and a month later - on the third. For six months the baby was in the intensive care unit of the cardio center in an extremely serious condition.

Katya recalls: "When I approached his bed in the intensive care unit, I was dizzy from the number of tubes, devices that measured and dripped dozens of drugs into several catheters." But - thank you doctors! - Nikita’s heart worked. True, the baby could not breathe without artificial ventilation, his trachea was not strengthened, but this problem could be overcome over time. Six months later, Nikita was discharged from the cardiocenter with a tracheostomy (breathing tube) in his neck, which doctors promised to remove in time.
To the great joy of his family, the boy finally got home; like all kids, he learned to crawl and walk, and Katya gradually came to her senses from the experience of resuscitation. How suddenly - a new blow! After that memorable call from an acquaintance, Katya rushed to the doctors to check her son’s hearing, and was stunned by another difficult diagnosis: Nikita has bilateral sensorineural hearing loss of the fourth degree. However, doctors did not rule out that the child may indeed have lost his hearing during intensive antibiotic therapy, including drugs with ototoxic effects. Antibiotics helped save Nikita’s life, but gave a complication to her hearing.

The baby was prescribed the strongest hearing aids, but for six months of wearing them he did not respond to speech, did not help or active classes with deaf educators, or the daily efforts of his mother. The only hope left was for hearing implants, with such a diagnosis they give a 100% positive effect.
According to the state program, which provides children with free implants, about a hundred children are operated on in Ukraine every year. However, they went to meet them at the ENT Institute: realizing that Nikita was a non-standard patient, they performed the operation on the first ear out of turn.

- It’s been only six months since the connection of the cochlear implant, and Nikita will not know! He responds to the name, fulfills simple requests by ear, dances to music. In short, he HEARS! It turns out that we have a growing music lover! - Katya recalls.

However, the baby is poorly oriented in space, can not determine where the sound is coming from. When the car is driving, it starts spinning on the spot, looking for a source of noise, and it’s dangerous. It is also difficult for him to be in a noisy crowd with one ear, it disorients and puts a heavy burden on the child’s brain. To solve these problems, Nikita needs to have a second ear operation, but it is no longer possible to do it for free in Ukraine: the state program provides the right to free implantation only once.
And the operation to implant a second cochlear implant is extremely important before the summer. In June-July, Nikita will have another planned heart operation, after which the boy will be able to remove the tracheostomy - a tube that supports his weak trachea. It is impossible to remove the tracheostomy prematurely, so during the next operations (on the ear and heart) the boy will install it again - otherwise it is impossible to intubate his lungs.

Because of the tracheostomy, Nikitka can’t start talking, and he really wants to! When he is experiencing strong emotions: rejoicing in his father, rushing to pet a dog or asking to play with a typewriter, he tries to make sounds, but it takes a lot of effort! But as soon as the doctors remove the tracheostomy, Nikita will definitely learn to speak! However, this will happen only after absolutely all planned operations.

- Our army in support of Nikita is growing, we have overcome very difficult times and diagnoses, but when it comes to cochlear implantation, everything rests on finances, which we have significantly depleted over the past three years, - says Katya.

The Badikov family alone cannot raise such a large sum for the treatment of a child, but they are sure that despite all the difficulties, their son will certainly hear, breathe and speak freely. Nikita is a smart, naughty and life-loving child and after treatment will be no different from other children. But you need to hurry! It is important to have cochlear implantation before summer!

We hope that the story of Nikita, who fights for his health and wins, has touched you, and you will respond to help him.

Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences Mehmet Zia Ozier, Asibadem Clinic (Turkey):“We have successful experience in cochlear implantation in young patients, including those with multiple multiple malformations. For this purpose we involve different specialists of our center that allows to consider all without an exception of a health problem. First, we examine, listen to the opinions of all specialists, prepare the child for surgery, and then implant a second implant in the boy. We are sure that everything will go smoothly, Nikita will hear well. "

The Turkish clinic Asibadem issued an invoice for $ 25,000 . This is UAH 678,000 . Nikita ’s relatives do not have such money .

Cochlear implantation of the second ear was successfully performed at the Asibadem Bodrum Clinic (Turkey). A cochlear implant was implanted in the boy’s left ear, a device that receives and recognizes electromagnetic signals from a speech processor attached to the outside. The operation was successful. All sensors gave positive "feedback", the implant is connected.
Here is what Katerina, Nikita’s mother, writes to us: “It has been a week since we came to the Acibadem clinic for treatment. Although it is difficult to call it a clinic, as the atmosphere and attitude are more like a resort. The next day after Nikita’s arrival, they performed an operation, which, thank God, was successful. It lasted about two hours. The surgeon who performed the operation was Professor Mehmet Ziya Ozuer, a great professional and a very good man. He did his job perfectly, the seam is small and inconspicuous, there is a slight swelling, but this is normal. In general, Nikita underwent this operation easier than on the first ear. In addition, the doctor volunteered to help us with the issue of Nikita’s breathing. I did a small examination and ordered a larger diameter tracheostomy. We’ve already installed it, and now it’s easier for Nikita to breathe. Very pleased that there is an opportunity to go beyond the clinic and get positive emotions from the beauty around. We want to thank everyone who took part in the fate of our Nikitka, thus giving us the opportunity to overcome all the trials, but in completely different conditions. Special thanks to Ufond.ua and Roman Betsenko for their support at all stages of our preparation and active participation in fundraising.
