Dima Kornienko needs expensive equipment – an insulin pump. The complex illness of Dima from Kyiv changed the life of his family very dramatically. In a short time, a healthy and active baby turned into a child with a disability. At the age of 10 months, Dima was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The boy felt unwell and ended up in intensive care. There, my mother, Elizabeth, learned that diabetes would now be their lifelong companion.
For almost a year, the Kornienko family has been learning to live in a special regime: round-the-clock monitoring of blood glucose readings, counting bread units, insulin injections. Mom is forced to constantly be with her son. The child, due to age, cannot independently control his condition. There is a solution to the problem for such children - this is the use of an insulin pump, which supplies insulin to the body automatically. Such therapy greatly facilitates the realities of a child with diabetes and makes it possible to live a full life. But it costs a lot of money. For help in purchasing an insulin pump and necessary components for their son, Dima’s parents turned to Ufond.
Mom did not immediately understand that something was wrong with Dima. At first, she noticed lethargy. Further weakness and vomiting joined. Mom thought it was a virus. But heavy breathing was especially alarming, it was decided to call an ambulance.
Dima was 10 months old when we ended up in intensive care, – Elizaveta recalls. – The doctors determined the child’s condition as moderate, he was immediately taken to intensive care, diabetic ketoacidosis was diagnosed. He spent 4 days in intensive care. According to the results of the tests, high blood sugar levels were determined - 32 mmol / l, and a coronavirus infection was also detected. From the intensive care unit, the son was transferred to the endocrinology department, they began to prepare and teach us how to live, eat and conduct insulin therapy for a child with type 1 diabetes.
The diet and physical activity of the son is constantly controlled by the mother. Explains and teaches at what time, what and how much you can eat, when you need to give an injection. But Dima is still quite small and does not understand much. Now he is completely dependent on his mother. Elizabeth tries to constantly monitor his blood counts and track changes in insulin needs. The situation is aggravated by the fact that Dima himself does not feel when his condition approaches hypoglycemia (low sugar level). This is dangerous, because at any moment a state of hypocoma can occur, and this is already a direct threat to the life of the child.
An alternative to injections and constant monitoring is an insulin pump.
The child carries this small device with him, with the help of which insulin is automatically and continuously supplied to the body according to pre-programmed individual settings. This therapy has many benefits. The main one is that a person gets more freedom in everyday life.
– In order to less prick his hands and stomach during the day, Dima really needs this device, with all the consumables, to make life easier for the child. But the pump is very expensive for us, since I’m on maternity leave, and Dima’s dad is temporarily unemployed. Now my son is 1 year and 9 months old, next year we want to go to kindergarten, but injecting insulin while running from a future job will not be the best solution, which is why we need to install a pump. It will be easier for the son to walk, spend the day with other children, and in the future, with growing up, it will be easier for Dima to live with pomp, – says Elizabeth.
Together we will help Dima, right?!
