Patrick Zhukov from the city of Mykolayiv urgently needs cochlear implantation in two ears. After an intensive course of antibiotic treatment, the baby completely lost his hearing.

Seven months ago, Patrick heard well, laughed out loud and babbled in his own way. But after heart surgery, which the baby underwent in February 2018, and intensive post-operative therapy, Patrick stopped hearing and seeing. Vision was restored in a few months, but no hearing. But to tell the story of how the baby and his parents are fighting for recovery, you should start from the beginning ...

Why "Patrick"?

Why Patrick? Apparently, the boy’s parents - Kateryna and Oleksandr Zhukov - hear this question most often, and the family has its own "legend" on this account. Katya says: “When I got pregnant, Sasha and I didn’t want to tell others about the addition to the family in advance, but our eldest daughter, nine-year-old Ksenia, can’t keep secrets. To talk to his daughter about the baby, the man jokingly called him "Patrick", so the whole pregnancy and led: "Patrick, Patrick ...". We explained to Ksenia that this is our fictional character, and she believed in our adult game. "
The baby was to be born in the summer, on the eve of St. Peter and St. Paul’s Day, and the couple planned to call it "Pasha". But Katya gave birth earlier, and Sasha decided: once every nine months the boy was "Patrick", so - so be it, let them stay. Grandmothers and friends did not believe at first that they really named the child that way, but Sasha took a photo of the birth certificate and showed the photo in confirmation.

Zhukov learned about heart disease before the birth of a child.

The couple was expecting a baby with great excitement and timid hope: and suddenly, contrary to doctors’ forecasts, everything will turn out well? ... And the forecasts, unfortunately, were alarming: in the eighth month of pregnancy Katya went for a routine ultrasound, during which the doctor found child severe heart disease. For Katya and Sasha it was a terrible blow, a shock from which they wanted to recover and act sooner, treat the baby, give everything that his heart did not seem, that their boy lived.

Doctors insisted on a caesarean section, and in June Patrick was born, but not in his native Nikolaev, but in Kiev. Given the complexity of the defect, doctors decided to urgently save the child, and four hours after birth, Patrick was again in the hands of surgeons: he had his first heart operation. But even after that, his heart barely contracted, and the boy was transferred to the intensive care unit - even doctors tried not to talk about the prognosis for the future.

Katya says that in those difficult days for them, her husband became her greatest support and proved to be the best dad in the world. Sasha visited the intensive care unit every day, in the morning and late in the evening, learned about his son’s health, came to Katya’s maternity hospital and comforted her. This great ordeal united their family even more.

"Thank you" to cardiologists.

Katya and Patrick got home only three months later. During this time, the boy underwent another operation on an open heart, for a long time was on artificial lung ventilation. He was in intensive care almost all the time. But when the mother and son were discharged from the hospital, it seemed that the hardest part was left behind. And here is a new blow. A month later, at a consultation, doctors recommended another operation because the boy’s heart was getting worse. Recalling that time, Katya is so worried that her voice is interrupted, and yet she continues her story: "In November (2017) we went to Kiev ... when the surgeon looked at the ultrasound, he said:" The child will not undergo surgery that will not survive. And without it he will live a little longer. We asked for a long time to give us a chance and operate on Patrick. We were in the department of Kyiv Pediatric Cardiology and Surgery, there are very good doctors. For a week, they decided our fate, instilled in Patrick very strong drugs, and then still risked surgery. On February 13, 2018, it was made - the third in a row, it lasted 10 hours. "
Rehabilitation after this operation was the most difficult, the boy was connected to the artificial circulation for a long time, and most importantly: he could not breathe on his own. To make the lungs work, doctors had to use all the latest developments available in our medicine. All this time Katya and Sasha were next to her son. Katya recalls how horrible it was to watch her child in intensive care connected to the tubes through which his blood circulated, how her heart sank at the thought of hurting her child, and how terrifying it was to hear in the clinic that someone in the ward had recently lost her child ... unfortunately, medicine is not omnipotent ...

Patrick will be completely healthy.

Five months have passed since the last operation, and on the day we talked to Katya, she shared her joy: Patrick sat down on his own for the first time. He has been home for a long time, and - "thank you" to the doctors - in the next five or six years, the family may not worry about his heart, and new surgeries in cardiology do not threaten them until school age. The boy was fitted with an artificial valve that stretches as his heart grows, and it works normally. Patrick’s recovery is a great victory for doctors, parents and the boy himself - he has great vitality and, no doubt, will be able to cope with the consequences of treatment.

After the operation, the child was given large doses of antibiotics that injure the hearing, but at the moment doctors are unable to prevent these side effects. The treatment also affected the star, but it has already resumed, but the hearing has yet to be restored. Diagnosis of the child: sensorineural hearing loss of the fourth degree - excludes the correction of hearing with conventional hearing aids. The problem can be solved only with the help of cochlear implants.

And you need to do it as soon as possible, because without hearing, the baby loses time to start learning to speak. Katya is worried that the baby is no longer laughing as loudly as before, and does not squirm. He wears very strong hearing aids, but he distinguishes only the loudest sounds, but he does not hear the voices of his mother, father and sister ... Doctors say that in a few months Patrick will fully recover from surgery and develop like a normal child. And the implantation of cochlear implants at the moment is the most important step that will allow Patrick to catch up with his peers and grow, no different from other boys.

We are sure that everything will go smoothly, Patrick will hear well. "
