Thirteen-year-old Sofia lives with her mother and older brother in the village of Novozhitlivka, Dnipropetrovsk region. The girl has idiopathic right-sided thoracic scoliosis of the 4th degree, it is getting harder for her to move every day. Until the age of 11, Sofia did not complain about her health, says her mother Olga. She led an active lifestyle, attended dance school, school clubs, played sports.
- The only thing that worried my daughter when she started doing a lot - the appearance of shortness of breath, - says Olga.
In October 2019, Olga began to pay attention to changes in her daughter’s posture. The deformation increased literally before my eyes. Severe fatigue began, there was severe back pain. At the hospital, where Anoshko’s family immediately went, Sofia had an X-ray.
- We were crazy: it turned out that my daughter has thoracolumbar scoliosis of the 3rd degree, a spine in the form of the English letter S, - says Olga.
The orthopedist prescribed massage, swimming pool, physical therapy and physiotherapy. All dances and sports had to be abandoned - doctors allowed to leave only classes where there is no load on the back. I had to wear Sheno’s tight corset and wear it for 24 hours.
- In the first year after the diagnosis, Sofia did not take off her corset, she slept in it - she even had bruises on her body, - says Olga.
However, conservative treatment did not help - on the contrary, the girl’s condition worsened: scoliosis not only does not stop, it has reached the 4th degree. Now it is difficult for Sofia to sit for a long time - her back is swollen. The walk becomes a test - the girl gets tired of walking much faster than before.
In July 2021, Anoshko sought advice from the Mother and Child Center. Professor Rudnev, in the Department of Orthopedics. There they were advised to apply to the University Clinic of Kharkiv National Medical University. After a complete examination by an orthopedic surgeon, Sofia was diagnosed with stage 4 idiopathic right thoracic scoliosis and recommended emergency surgery.
Surgeons to correct scoliotic deformity of the spine, surgeons will perform using a rigid metal structure-implant. Doctors promised Sofia that the operation would be gentle, it will be done using new technology that will preserve the flexibility of the spine.
Sofia knows that she will have a two-stage operation: first preparatory to the thoracic department, and then - the installation of the implant. He knows that difficult rehabilitation is needed and he will have to forget about all activities and loads for a while. However, she is ready.
- I am old enough to realize the importance and necessity of such treatment, - says the girl. - I understand that without surgery I will only get worse.
Now Sofia is mentally drawing her life after recovery. She talks with inspiration about her healthy future, where she will definitely become a doctor:
- I dream of how I will live, how I will help other people with a straight back, treat them! My dream is to become a doctor who will save people’s lives.
