Zoya Potapenko

Occluder paid. OPERATED in August 2016.

Zoe’s illness manifested itself last year, so unexpectedly that it caught her by surprise… In the summer, Zoe played pioneer ball at a sports camp and won a medal for best play. And in the autumn the first alarm bell rang: during the lesson Zoe had nothing to breathe, everything floated before her eyes, her hands grew cold. On the same day, he and his mother heard a disappointing conclusion from a cardiologist: heart disease, probably a defect. An echocardiogram confirmed that the girl had an open ductus arteriosus. Surgeons of the Heart Institute (Kyiv) insist on surgery. The defect can be closed in a gentle way, with the help of a special microdevice - an occluder. But Zoe’s parents can’t afford it.

At 16, it’s time to dream and make plans. Ahead are recklessly cheerful students, the romance of unknown roads, new acquaintances, the first serious relationships. Zoya also dreams: to be successful, to get two higher educations, to study architecture like a grandfather, to study geography seriously - here you have to choose where to start. Graduation class is ahead, there is still time for reflection.

Ever since the doctor announced the diagnosis, Zoya has been living with a view to her illness. My favorite coffee has disappeared from the menu, and physical education has disappeared from the schedule. I had to say goodbye to my favorite activities: pioneer ball, basketball, ballroom dancing. Feelings and stress should also be ruled out, but it’s harder. Where will you go from speaking at seminars, anxiously waiting for grades for tests? And the workload at school is serious. True, German, French and English are given to Zoe easily, but you have to sweat over mathematics - but both dad and mom are brilliantly versed in the exact sciences!
When Zoe gets upset, she feels her heart pound and her palms sweat. At such moments, Zoya’s mother sounds the alarm and calls an ambulance.

As a child, Zoe was very ill. At four months she suffered from bronchitis, then - pneumonia. Over time, bronchitis became chronic. In the summer Zoya was taken to the sea, and in the winter they were wary of new exacerbations. Now that doctors have diagnosed Zoe with a heart defect, her mother Julia realizes that she has been saving her daughter from the effects of the underlying disease for years.

Zoya has already been examined at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. N.M. Amosov and the Heart Institute (Kyiv). Experts came to a unanimous opinion: only endovascular surgery can solve the girl’s problem. However, it is not necessary to expect that the necessary Zoe occluder will be purchased with budget funds: in Ukraine, only one in five pediatric heart surgeries is funded by the state.

And Zoya’s relatives have no savings at all. Yulia has been working in the communal center of the Podilskyi district of Kyiv for 20 years now, her chances of finding a new promising job are negligible.

- We have a reorganization of the enterprise. Now I get less money, - admits Julia, - and at home lying mother-in-law who needs care. The husband also has a small income, depending on the season.

The family lives, barely making ends meet. In their three-room apartment, little has changed since Zoe’s grandparents’ youth — the same furniture, the same things. Julia as a hostess one consolation - to brilliantly wash his modest home. But it’s not about everyday life: when the only child is sick, other problems fade. Now it is important for Julia that the ambulance never stops near their house, that her daughter does not turn pale and lose consciousness, that her life is not in danger. And Zoe’s dreams? They will surely come true, there would be health!

Head of Endovascular Surgery of the Heart Institute Andrei Khokhlov (Kiev):
"Zoe has a congenital heart defect. Given the topic of the defect and the general condition of the girl, she needs to perform endovascular closure of the open duct with a special spiral - occluder. This will stop the development of dangerous complications. The girl will be healthy. "
